Biologist claim that the majority of bucks reaching 3 years of age won't be taken by hunters but will live to die of natural causes. Such was the case for the 6 1/2 year old buck that grew the antlers shown to the right scoring 148 6/8 Boone & Crockett points.

Opinion

Part of my enjoyment of the bow and muzzleloader seasons was a feeling of stepping back to a time of our ancestors. I feel that with the technology of laser sights, compound bows being not much less than crossbows, and blackpowder weapons that are almost guaranteed to shoot 100% of the time we are losing any connection to primitive weapons!

   Safety Tip

In a hurry to get to my bow stand the other morning I realized I had forgotten my safety belt. Reluctant to miss a hunt I climbed into my portable stand anyway.

As I sat there I thought about the age of the strap that was holding the stand to the tree. Then I thought about how many bolts I’ve seen broken on different thing and then I thought about how many times I’ve gotten sleepy on the stand. It only takes the first time for one of those things to happen to make for a tragic ending. I thought about how many people have fallen from stands and said it was the second time. Probably zero!

My point is always wear a safety belt!

Oh! Did I have any luck on the hunt? Yes I did. I didn’t see the first deer but I came home in one piece!!!

Tip

Tying a tampon to a paper clip is a great way
to dispense your favorite deer attractant.
Bending the paper clip a little will  allow
you to hang it on a tree limb.
Be careful when applying the scent to the
tampon as it will absorb the entire bottle.
