Finding tracks, droppings, and scrapes is encouraging to the deer hunter but rubs like this will raise the hopes of the buck hunter considerably!

There were more rubs than you could count within 75 yards of the ones in the photo. The photographer bagged an 8 pt. with 21" main beams on the last day of the season!

Deer Browse
As hunters we often only concern ourselves with locating the hot feeding spots to improve our hunting success. Acorns, food plots, crop fields and in some states even feeders are where we prefer to place our stands. But deer have to eat year round and nature has provided multitudes of browse. Learning to recognize some of these can also be valuable in your scouting forays. Here are just a few of the more popular browsing plants.

Privet (Click photos to see larger picture)

Grows on the edges of clearings and fields. A favorite for sure!

French Mulberry (American Beautyberry)

This is quite often found on the edges of old logging roads. Deer eat the woody stem tips.

Yellow Jasmine

Toxic to cattle but not deer. Also green briar and poison ivy are edible foods for deer.

Crab apple

Not a browse plant but deer do like the fruit of crab apple and persimmon trees.
